DMU Replay

1. Provisioning a module to accept DMU Replay recordings

In some instances new Blackboard module templates can lose their connection to DMU Replay, which means it is not possible to add links to DMU Replay recordings in the module. This can be rectified by ‘provisioning’ the module.
You can identify if your module has lost its connection to DMU Replay, if when you try to add a panopto video link (even if you haven’t recorded any yet)

you are greeted with the following message

To provision the module, follow the guide at: http://celt.our-archive.dmu.ac.uk/panopto-provisioning-a-blackboard-shell-quickguide/

2. ‘Ready to view’ emails from DMU Replay

DO NOT copy and paste any of the links from the DMU Replay ready to view emails into your Blackboard module – as they will not work correctly.

Always use the method outlined at: https://celt.our-archive.dmu.ac.uk/panopto-adding-a-recording-to-blackboard-quickguide/

Blackboard – Course Copy

Instructions on how to copy content from this year’s module into next year’s module can be found at:

http://celt.our-archive.dmu.ac.uk/blackboard/blackboard-how-do-i/blackboard-site-management-tasks/copying-and-backup-tasks/course-copy/

NOTE: When copying content into a new module shell, you should delete all the Turnitin submission links and DMU Replay recording links that have been copied into the new module as these will not work in the new module. New Turnitin submission links and DMU Replay recording links will need to be manually added to the new module shell.

Specific instructions on how to copy and move DMU Replay recordings into new modules can be found at: http://celt.our-archive.dmu.ac.uk/make-a-panopto-video-available-in-two-or-more-modules/

Blackboard Grade Centre – releasing grades to students

There have been a few incidents recently where students have been able to see their grades in Blackboard, even though the specific column in Grade Centre has been hidden. NOTE: This does not apply to Turnitin grades as they are not released until the post date has been reached.

When hiding columns in Grade Centre it is important that you hide the column in which the grades are listed, AND the Total column AND the Weighted Total column (that is if you are keeping a running total in the Weighted Total column)

The process for hiding columns in Grade Centre can be found at:

http://celt.our-archive.dmu.ac.uk/hiding-test-grades-from-students-using-the-grade-centre/

Turnitin

Turnitin will be out of action for essential maintenance on Wednesday December 27th from 4pm – 1am (Dec. 28).

DMU Replay

When using the advanced editor in DMU Replay (Panopto), you should not use the Save As function, because it doesn’t function as you would expect.

image of panopto advanced editor

It does save a new version of your recording, however – the new version is still linked to the original version so if you were to make a change to the original version it also makes the same changes to your save as version!!! The best option for creating an edited version of your original recording is to make a copy of the original, edit this copy in the basic editor, and publish it.

DMU Replay

Please ensure that your staff led teaching recordings (DMU Replay) are available within the ‘Learning materials’ section of your Blackboard module shell.  This is to ensure a consistency of approach and that our students are able to easily locate all resources.  When sharing DMU Replay content in Blackboard please use the Panopto video link tool. There is a full description of this process on the CELT hub at the link below:

https://celt.our-archive.dmu.ac.uk/panopto-adding-a-recording-to-blackboard-quickguide/

Using bookmarks to efficiently accesses ‘how to’ guides on the CELT hub

There are certain process and practices in the use of technologies to support teaching, learning and assessment that you may only use a few times a year, and at widely dispersed intervals. This can sometimes result in you not remembering the process and having to try and re-locate the ‘how to’ instructions on the CELT hub.

Using the bookmark function in your web browser can be a good way to keep track of where these essential ‘how to’ guides are located, and provide you with instant access to them – without having to search for them every time in the CELT hub.

Follow the link below to find out how to use bookmarks

Blackboard – emailing announcements to students

If you are using the Date Restricted function for an announcement in Blackboard

You cannot set it to automatically send a copy of the announcement as an email to your students. The send email function only works for announcements which are posted immediately! 🙁

DMU Replay

1. Rob has put together a quickguide which shows how to double check that the microphone has been set correctly when recording in the classroom. See: http://celt.our-archive.dmu.ac.uk/checking-dmu-replay-classroom-microphone/

2. There have been several cases where staff have logged off of the classroom computer before their DMU Replay recording has had time to be uploaded (transferred) into the DMU Replay system. If this happens you will be unable to create a link to the recording in your Blackboard module. At the completion of your recording, having clicked the Upload button

You must wait until the upload progress bars have disappeared from the screen, before closing the DMU Replay software or logging off of the computer.

The Collaboratory – Digital Classroom

The Collaboratory is a creative learning space supporting active, collaborative teaching activities through group work using tables with digital displays and interactivity.

Rob Weale and Julia Reeve (CELT) are running a demo of the digital classroom on Monday 11th December, 1130am-1230.

Where is the collaboratory?

If you are interested, please contact Rob Weale: RWeale@dmu.ac.uk

ELT Case Study

Heather Conboy (CELT, ADH) has written a case study about the novel use of DMU Replay and recording equipment in Fashion Design. See:

http://celt.our-archive.dmu.ac.uk/case-study-multimedia-in-fashion/

This approach may have some relevance for HLS, such as recording lab activities, clinical skills practice, etc. If you are interested in exploring the potential of this approach for your teaching practice – contact Rob (rweale@dmu.ac.uk).

Blackboard – Setting up groups

There is a glitch when using the group set function in Blackboard for creating groups. Note: this does not affect the setting up of individual groups.

In the Group Set Enrolments panel, the ‘Filter Available Members’ box is checked by default. However, in order to make this function work you should untick the box and then re-tick the box. I.e. toggle the tick off and then on.

DMU Replay

1. Reminder for new staff that there are DMU Replay training sessions available which can be booked at:

http://celt.our-archive.dmu.ac.uk/support-using-technology/staff-development-workshops/#replay

2. Tip: in the DMU Replay/Panopto editor there is an option which allows you to remove individual PowerPoint slides from the recording without also removing the audio behind it. This is useful if you have copyright protected content in your live presentation slides that you are not permitted to record.

Having made the recording – in the Panopto editor click on the individual slide that you want to delete, and click the trash icon

To save the changes, you must click the Publish button at the top right of the editor screen.

3. Tip: When copying and moving recordings (e.g. at the start of the new academic year when you want to re-use last year’s recordings) you do not need to copy and move one recording at a time – if they are in the same folder you can do it in multiple batches. In the folder view, check/tick which recordings you want to copy or move, click the Copy or Move button and follow the onscreen instructions.

DMU Replay

Three issues that you may experience . . .

1. There is currently a glitch whereby staff are incorrectly added to DMU Replay recordings that are not their own! ITMS are aware of the issue and are working with Panopto to resolve it.

2. When attempting to add a link to a DMU Replay recording in Blackboard you are presented with the following:

If so, follow these guidelines: http://celt.our-archive.dmu.ac.uk/panopto-provisioning-a-blackboard-shell-quickguide/

3. When recording a session you find that there is no module folder for this year (2018) available to be selected. E.g.

If this happens:

Step 1) record to last year’s module (or any other folder you have access to)

Step 2) after the recording has been made, create a folder for this year’s module – following this guide:
http://celt.our-archive.dmu.ac.uk/panopto-provisioning-a-blackboard-shell-quickguide/

Step 3) move the new recording into the new module folder – following this guide
http://celt.our-archive.dmu.ac.uk/dmu-replay-wayward-recording/

Step 4) create a link to it in blackboard –

Turnitin Feedback Studio glitch in Internet Explorer

If you are using Turnitin to mark work online, be aware that there is a slight glitch if you are using it in the Internet Explorer web browser – this is the default web browser used at DMU.

When entering feedback in the Text Comment panel;

image of turnitin feedback summary panel

if you want to delete some text – DO NOT use a right click of the mouse to delete the text, as the deleted text will re-appear once you close the turnitin document viewer. You should use either the Delete or Backspace keys on your computer keyboard – not the mouse.
